2 PCOD (periapical cemento-osseous dysplasia) is a fibro-osseous lesion that is
common in middle aged African-American women. If the lesion is not
associated with apex of teeth, they are termed “focal cemento-osseous
dysplasia”. If the lesion is present in multiple areas of the jaw, it is termed
“florid cemento-osseous dysplasia”. Most PCOD are incidental findings during
routine radiograph as patients are usually asymptomatic. The lesion often
progresses from radiolucent to radio-opaque over time. No treatment is required
other than routine monitoring.
