Chapter Synopsis
Prologue
Respecting the Complex and Variable Root Canal Systems
The cases in this chapter will exemplify the ideas and techniques of Schilderian
Endodontics, from recognizing possible lateral canals by properly interpreting pre-
operative radiographs, to producing obturated root canal systems that precisely
correspond to said prediction.
Chapter 1
Adhere to the Strict Treatment Philosophy of Schilderian Endodontics
In this chapter, the author will answer the following questions: What is the
material that seals the lateral and accessory canals when using warm vertical compaction
technique? Is it the same substance that is used to fill the main canals? What is the
difference between a dense overfill and a non-dense overextension, and why is
overfilling encouraged in Dr. Schilder’s obturation technique? Finally, in the event of a
previous failed root canal treatment, how do we decide whether to dive straight in for
an apicoectomy or take a more conservative route and complete non-surgical root canal
retreatment? What are the guidelines and criteria in selecting either treatment?
Chapter 2
Endodontic Treatment is Essentially Carrying out Infection Control
of the Root Canal System
How do we create adequate coronal seal in cases with gross caries to ensure the
effectiveness of the root canal treatment? What are the differences in treatment modality
in cases where there is pre-existing abscess (gumboil) or draining fistula? Are sealers
essential in obturation? Does sealer extrusion cause any adverse tissue reaction? What
are the specific requirements for sealers in warm vertical compaction technique?
